How does the UN maintain peace and security?

The United Nations or UN was established in 1945 in order to prevent conflicts among nations. Its main function consists of helping conflicting parties to restore harmony in their relation. The United Nations is in charge with creating conditions that allow sustainable peace in the world.

The duty to secure international peace and security falls under the primary responsibility UN Security Council. The peace ambassador Prem Rawat said that it has become commonplace to find conflicts among communities, countries or individuals even though you go to a developing country or to a flourishing nation.

Conflict prevention

To maintain peace and enhance good relationship among nations, the main strategy used by the UN consists of preventing any conflict to arise. The UN uses diplomacy to prevent tensions from turning into conflicts or wars. It sends its special envoy into countries which are possibly at rows with each other. Such a strategy saves the nations from paying off the massive economic costs of conflicts and wars, and prevents human and material losses.

Likewise, in order to maintain global peace and security, the Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF) was established to bring their contribution to the plight of the most deprived people. The foundation shares humanitarian aid and gives peace education with the aim to maintain peace. The peace ambassador shares words of peace to promote good relationship among people.

Peacekeeping and Mediation

If conflicts have occurred, the UN acts as an intermediary to restore harmony among the conflicting areas or countries. Through diplomacy and peace talks, the UN helps the countries to restore their tarnished relationship. It acts as a peace mediator and helps the nations negotiate conditions to restore peace, and make agreements to maintain harmony.

Since its creation, mediation and diplomacy have been considered as the most effective tools for the UN to manage conflicts and bring back harmony among the countries that have been at wars.

The use of multi-dimensional peacekeeping operations

Thanks to the multidimensional peacekeeping operations of the UN, it is possible to maintain peace and security in the world. Another advantage of this strategy is that it makes it easy to deal with political processes and protect us from the devastative effects of wars. The operations aim also at taking more effective measures to disarm and demobilize armed forces to prevent further conflicts to occur.

The UN also helps reintegrate former combatants into the society. Apart from direct conflict management, the UN is also involved in maintaining inner-state peace by supporting constitutional processes and helping countries at risk to organize presidential and other major elections.

It addresses humanitarian issues by protecting and encouraging respect for human rights. The UN facilitates the process to restore the rule of law and helps restore the legitimate authority of the government.

Terrorism prevention

The UN is in charge of coordinating and organizing global actions to crack down on acts of terrorism. To address this issue, the UN has elaborated 18 universal instruments to detect and counter terrorist activities. In 2006, the UN took the initiative to lead its state members to adopt the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. The main objective is to make state members stay safe from any possible terrorist attack.
